Marcus Aurelius was emperor of Rome from AD 161 to his death in 180, during which time he witnessed the gradual crumbling of the Roman frontiers, as well as famines and plagues. He turned more a more to the study of Stoic philosophy, and, while staying in the Danube region, wrote down the reflections now known as his Meditations which reveal a mind of great humanity and natural humility. A selection of these Meditations is contained in this volume.
